Right out of the box I could see what all the SX talk is about. For $109 you get a great instrument. There is no better deal out there. The finish on the body is superb. The quality of sunburst is far better than other economy instruments. The vintage finish on the neck is great – having second thoughts about reshaping the headstock as the finish is too nice to purposely mar.
The hardware is surprisingly not bad. I am used to seeing poor plating work or sharp edges. The parts on this instrument are above what I expected.
Unplugged the bass sounds and feels good. However, when plugged in, the bass side pickup was very weak. I removed the pickup and found the magnet fell off the back. Once re-adhered the bass sounded great. This may be an issue for users not comfortable with taking things apart, but I know Rondo’s return service is pretty good. I plan to replace the pickups as this is a project bass for me.
I have read online that the pickguard is the weak point. There was a small scratch which penetrated the protective layer. This is a VERY minor scratch, and since I am planning to change the guard, I don’t mind. The edges of the guard are a little rough, but I have seen worse on pricier instruments. Again, this is still a GREAT deal.
The string tree is odd. Unlike the Fender design, the SX tree has grooves to hold the strings. This will be the first part to get replaced. I suspect the strings will get caught and potentially break at the tree.
Overall, this boss feels and sounds good. And that is difficult to say about other brands at a similar cost point. Awesome deal for $109. Time to buy another one!
